Investors in Trellus Health (TRLS) have watched the Trellus Health administration process arrive at speed: the company has filed a notice of intention to appoint administrators, confirming it has insufficient funds to continue trading as a going concern.
Trading in TRLS shares on AIM (the London Stock Exchange’s market for smaller companies) had already been suspended since 8 May 2026. Shareholders were formally notified of the financial difficulties on 12 August 2026.
How the Cash Ran Out
The numbers behind the Trellus Health administration tell a straightforward story of a company spending faster than it could raise revenue.
Net cash (the money left after subtracting short-term liabilities from cash holdings) stood at $12.2m at the end of 2023. By 31 December 2024, according to the company’s final-results announcement, that had fallen to $4.34m. The adjusted EBITDA loss (earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation, stripped of one-off items) for the year ended 31 December 2024 was $7.2m, up from $5.8m the year before.
The trajectory continued into 2025. Interim results showed net cash of $1.6m as of 30 June 2025, down from $4.3m at the prior period end. At that rate of outflow, the eventual collapse of the company’s finances was a question of timing rather than direction.
The final-results announcement for the year ended 31 December 2024 had already cited the company’s funding arrangements as casting significant doubt on its ability to continue as a going concern. That warning, in plain language, meant the auditors and directors could not be confident the company would still be operating within twelve months.
What Trellus Health Was Trying to Do
Founded in July 2020, Trellus Health focused initially on Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD), including Crohn’s Disease and ulcerative colitis. The company’s proposition rested on its Trellus Elevate® platform, which combined resilience-based care with data analytics and held exclusive licensing for its GRITT™ methodology from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.
The platform was backed by clinical research showing over 85% reduction in unplanned healthcare use. Whether or not that figure held up at scale in commercial contracts, it was not enough to generate revenue at a pace that matched the company’s costs.
IBD is a genuine and growing clinical burden, and digital health tools that reduce hospital admissions are attractive to commissioners and insurers in theory. The difficulty for Trellus was converting that clinical promise into contracts large enough to sustain a listed company’s overhead and growth ambitions simultaneously.
Trellus Health Administration: What Happens Next
A notice of intention to appoint administrators (often called an NOI) gives a company a short moratorium, typically ten business days, during which creditors cannot take enforcement action. Administrators, once formally appointed, take control of the business with a duty to creditors rather than shareholders.
For TRLS shareholders, administration is rarely the outcome they hope for. Shareholders sit behind secured creditors, unsecured creditors, and employees in the queue for any proceeds from a sale or wind-down of assets. In many small-cap administrations, ordinary shareholders receive nothing.
AIM has seen a run of small digital health and technology companies struggle after the post-pandemic funding environment tightened. Rising interest rates made loss-making growth companies harder to finance, and the pool of investors willing to fund repeated fundraising rounds at small-cap level contracted sharply. Trellus is not alone in this cohort, but that is cold comfort to anyone holding TRLS.
The share suspension since 8 May 2026 has already made the position illiquid, meaning holders cannot sell even at a distressed price. When the administrator filing progresses, the London Stock Exchange will cancel the AIM admission if the company enters formal insolvency proceedings.
The key near-term event is the formal appointment of administrators and any subsequent announcement about whether a buyer for the underlying technology or patient-programme assets has been found. If a trade sale of the platform is completed, the terms will determine whether any value flows back beyond the secured creditor layer.
