Base App Hyperliquid Integration Brings 290 Perp Markets, Blocks UK Users

The Base App Hyperliquid integration went live on 19 August 2026, giving eligible self-custody users access to more than 290 perpetual futures markets spanning Bitcoin, Ethereum, tokenised stocks and commodities, but locking out anyone in the US, UK or Canada.

What the Base App Hyperliquid Integration Actually Does

Perpetual futures (derivatives contracts with no expiry date that let traders go long or short with borrowed capital) are the dominant instrument in crypto. Coinbase says perpetuals account for roughly three-quarters of all crypto trading volume, which is why the product existed before the social features that Base App was originally built around.

The mechanics are straightforward. Hyperliquid, one of the largest onchain derivatives venues, handles all trade matching and execution. The user interface stays inside Base App. Coinbase is not building its own onchain perpetuals engine; it is routing its user base to Hyperliquid’s existing liquidity.

Leverage of up to 50x is available, meaning a £1,000 position can control up to £50,000 of exposure. Coinbase has confirmed that positions can be liquidated (forcibly closed by the platform to limit losses) if losses cross pre-set thresholds. Fee structure and the complete list of supported markets have not been disclosed.

Chintan Turakhia, Coinbase’s Head of Engineering, described perps as ‘the single most requested feature from our power users.’ The geofencing of the US, UK and Canada reflects the regulatory environment in each jurisdiction rather than a product limitation.

A Deeper Relationship Than a Single Feature Launch

The Base App launch sits on top of a relationship that has been building for months. On 14 May 2026, Coinbase became Hyperliquid’s official USDC treasury deployer, taking responsibility for managing the dollar liquidity that underpins Hyperliquid’s markets. At the time of that announcement, USDC on Hyperliquid had reached approximately $5 billion, representing roughly 2x year-over-year growth.

Under that arrangement, Hyperliquid receives up to 90% of the yield generated from USDC deposits on its platform, with that revenue directed toward buying back its native token, HYPE, according to Motley Fool’s analysis of the deal. Coinbase also secured the right to purchase assets tied to Hyperliquid’s native stablecoin USDH, which will remain redeemable for USDC or fiat without fees during a migration period before being phased out.

The Base App perps feature is the retail distribution layer added on top of that existing infrastructure relationship.

What Coinbase Is Building on the Institutional Side

On 29 May 2026, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) confirmed that perpetual contracts structured as described by Coinbase Financial Markets can be categorised as foreign futures under Commission Regulation 30.1. Separately, the National Futures Association approved Coinbase Financial Markets as a Futures Commission Merchant, the regulated entity class (an FCM is a firm registered to accept orders for futures contracts) that connects US institutional clients to global crypto derivatives.

Coinbase Prime now describes Coinbase Financial Markets as ‘the first and only CFTC-regulated FCM connecting US institutions to global crypto options and perpetual futures.’ Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong said before that clearance that US users had been locked out of roughly 80% of global crypto markets, according to Yahoo Finance’s reporting on the CFTC approval. Options on Deribit, which Coinbase acquired, are already live for eligible clients, with broader retail perpetuals access described as forthcoming.

The institutional and retail tracks are moving in parallel. The CFTC-approved FCM route serves US professional and institutional clients. The Base App integration serves international retail users who hold their own crypto (self-custody). The overlap, for now, is the Hyperliquid infrastructure running underneath both.

The Social Pivot That Preceded This

Base App was relaunched as an everything app built around crypto-native social features: Farcaster, Zora and creator coins. The idea was that social would drive the next wave of crypto adoption. It did not work out that way.

In a July 2026 post on X, Base’s Jesse Pollak wrote that Coinbase had ‘made the right bet on builders, but obviously the wrong bet on social.’ The builders who did drive adoption, he wrote, built prediction markets, perpetuals and stablecoins. The social market collapsed entirely.

The perps integration is the direct product of that reassessment. HYPE jumped 11% on 19 August 2026, the day of the Base App launch, after CoinDesk reported that CFTC Chair Mike Selig is working to bring Hyperliquid’s perpetual futures platform under US federal rules. If that regulatory process advances, the current geofencing of US users could eventually change.
