Polymarket Kalshi World Cup Odds Matched to a Decimal as $5.5bn Flowed Through the Final

Polymarket Kalshi World Cup odds landed within a fraction of a percentage point of each other before Sunday’s final, despite the two platforms running entirely separate order books, user bases and liquidity pools. Spain won the match 1-0 against Argentina in New Jersey on 19 July, but the story that will travel further in financial and betting circles is how independently-arrived-at prices converged so closely on the same outcome.

Polymarket priced Spain at roughly 59% ahead of kickoff, with Argentina near 40%. Kalshi’s market, built on a different pool of traders and capital, landed at 59.6% for Spain and 40.4% for Argentina. ForkLog, citing on-chain data from analyst defioasis.eth, reported a slightly different Polymarket reading of 58% for Spain and 42% for Argentina in the moments before the match; the gap between the two accounts is small, but the direction of both is the same: two separate crowds reached almost the same conclusion.

Record Volume Made the Convergence Harder to Dismiss

The scale of money behind those probabilities matters. Polymarket’s World Cup winner contract alone processed $4.28 billion in total trading volume. Kalshi’s equivalent contract added another $1.29 billion, having already crossed the $1.2 billion milestone before the final was played, according to CNBC.

The final match alone drove $1.89 billion in notional trading on Kalshi across all its World Cup match contracts, according to Deadspin. Across all of Kalshi’s 2026 World Cup markets combined, total volume exceeded $12 billion according to Quartz, though DeFi Rate puts the figure at least $13.76 billion once individual markets are totalled separately. Both sources cite Kalshi’s own data; the difference likely reflects how contracts are categorised and counted.

For context on how far prediction markets have travelled: by the Round of 32, Polymarket’s World Cup winner market had already pulled in $3.3 billion, comfortably ahead of the approximately $1.4 billion in prediction-market trading drawn by the 2026 Super Bowl, according to CryptoSlate. Polymarket’s total monthly volume hit a record $10.8 billion in June 2026, with its US platform doing more than $3.5 billion in that month alone, up from $1.77 billion in May, per CNBC.

Kalshi added 3 million new users across the tournament, the company told CNBC, and recorded more than $30 billion in total trading volume in June alone. Rothera, a rival event-contract exchange that only launched in June 2026, processed more than $2 billion in notional volume during the month and captured 7% of the US prediction market, according to Bank of America figures cited by CNBC.

Most Traders Lost. The Polymarket Kalshi World Cup Odds Were Right, but Execution Was Another Matter

Getting the direction right and making money are two separate things. On-chain analyst defioasis.eth examined more than 194,000 Polymarket wallets and found roughly two-thirds ended the tournament in the red. Only five wallets generated profits above $1 million, according to the same analysis cited by Yahoo Finance. The top winner across all World Cup markets on Polymarket made more than $7.4 million, funnelling those gains into a single address.

On the loss side, 43 addresses each dropped more than $100,000 in the winner market alone, combining for over $15 million in losses, according to ForkLog. The single largest individual loss across Polymarket’s World Cup markets was $4.9 million, on a bet that Morocco would not win its 4 July match. Only 54 wallets turned a profit of more than $100,000 in the winner market, per CryptoRank.

The most-discussed single position was an Argentina backer who entered the final sitting on more than $5 million in unrealised profit, only to see the position collapse to a $1.23 million loss after Spain’s victory. Canadian rapper Drake, according to on-chain data reported by the Bitcoin Foundation, placed $1.5 million USDT on Argentina to win in regulation time.

What the Price Convergence Tells Retail Investors

Prediction markets (contracts where traders buy shares that pay out if a stated event occurs) are increasingly cited alongside polling and conventional bookmakers as probability gauges for political and sporting events. The near-identical pricing between Polymarket and Kalshi, reached through independent trading, suggests that at sufficient volume the two platforms are drawing on overlapping information flows even if their user bases differ.

For UK ISA and SIPP holders watching from the sidelines, the practical takeaway is narrower: these platforms are growing fast and are attracting institutional attention, but the data from 194,000 wallets is a reminder that the crowd was mostly wrong about Argentina, even if the market-implied probability for Spain was directionally correct all along. The next stress test arrives with the 2026 US midterm elections, where Kalshi’s expanded user base and Polymarket’s record volumes will be put to work on a far more contested outcome than a football final.
