EC Markets Marketing Director Nick Xydas Departs After Liverpool FC Deal

Nick Xydas, the EC Markets Marketing Director who built the forex and contracts for difference (CFD) broker’s global marketing function from scratch, has left the firm after roughly two and a half years. No successor has been named and Xydas has not disclosed his next role.

What EC Markets Marketing Director Built in Two and a Half Years

Xydas announced his departure on LinkedIn, describing his time at the company as an ‘incredible chapter.’ When he arrived, EC Markets had almost no global marketing function or presence. By the time he left, the broker had an established team, a dedicated office and an international brand footprint.

‘I could not be prouder of every single member of my team and what we achieved together,’ Xydas wrote. He thanked EC Markets CEO and Chairman Matthew Smith for backing him from the outset.

The headline commercial achievement of that period was securing a multi-year global partnership with Liverpool FC, confirmed by the club on its Liverpool FC official news page. EC Markets became the club’s Official Global Partner, with the arrangement formally beginning ahead of the new Premier League season, as detailed in the broker’s own EC Markets partner announcement on 1 August 2025.

On the EC Markets Liverpool FC sponsorship page, Matthew Smith is quoted as saying: ‘We’re delighted to partner with Liverpool FC, a club with a rich history and global reach. This mirrors EC Markets [values].’

Alongside the Liverpool deal, Xydas oversaw the recruitment of world-famous snooker player Judd Trump as a brand ambassador in 2025, part of the same sports-led strategy that used high-profile associations to support trust and market entry across multiple regions.

Scale of the Business Xydas Leaves Behind

The commercial context for that strategy is laid out in trading data from the third quarter of 2025. EC Markets recorded $3.081 trillion in total trading volume for the period, with a monthly average of $1.027 trillion and 118,000 active global traders, according to figures shared on the Liverpool FC LinkedIn post on the EC Markets partnership. That is the scale of the audience the marketing function was built to serve.

EC Markets also served as a Diamond Sponsor at the Finance Magnates London Summit 2025, one of the sector’s larger industry gatherings, where CEO Matt Smith spoke on regulatory pressures, as outlined on the broker’s Finance Magnates London Summit recap page.

Who Now Holds the Sponsorship Brief

Day-to-day responsibility for the Liverpool FC partnership sits with Nicholas Haralambos McGregor, who joined EC Markets earlier in 2025 as Sponsorship and Partnerships Manager in London. His remit covers activation and relationship management for the Liverpool deal and the broker’s other sponsorship projects.

McGregor’s background is broader than the snippet description of ‘former eToro executive’ suggests. According to a report by FX News Group, he also served as Marketing Manager for the United Rugby Championship for approximately two years, and had earlier roles at Biffa and 42Bruton PR Agency before his time at eToro.

McGregor handles the sponsorship portfolio, but EC Markets has made no announcement about who will take over Xydas’ broader global marketing remit.

A Career Spanning Two Decades in Financial Marketing

Xydas was appointed as Marketing Director in 2024, with a stated objective of building EC Markets into a recognisable global brand. He arrived from Matworks, a Cyprus-based technology company where he had served as Chief Marketing Officer for about a year.

Before that, he spent almost three years at FXGT, moving from Marketing Technology Manager to Head of Business Development for its Japanese operation. He also held Chief Marketing Officer roles at Eurotrader for around two years, and spent three years leading marketing and communications at corporate services firm Totalserve Group. His career in financial marketing and business leadership stretches back to 2004, covering brokerage, payments and technology businesses.

EC Markets now carries that brand infrastructure forward without its architect. Whether the broker promotes internally, recruits externally, or reshapes the function entirely will be the first real test of how durable that build turns out to be.

He began on the graduate scheme at a large UK fund house, moved to the multi-asset desk, and spent the bulk of his career running balanced mandates for pension schemes and charities. He left after the third reorganisation in five years and started filing copy because the industry needed fewer product launches and more honest commentary. He writes about fund performance, asset allocation, pensions, and the gap between what the marketing deck says and what the factsheet shows. He has sat through enough quarterly reviews to know when a fund manager is explaining alpha and when they are explaining luck. Edward lives in Hampshire.
