The 3 Reasons You Need To Read Your Car Owner’s Manual

Since many people assume they know a lot about cars already they rarely read the car owner’s manual. It seems as though it is full of obvious information that isn’t going to be particularly useful. Truth be told, that may be the case for some of the content in the manual as it can be quite obvious to anybody who has owned a car in the past.

However, there is a lot of good, useful information to be found in the owner’s manual. It should be seen as a resource that will help you get the most out of owning the car that you bought. This is especially true when you consider that every car is different. In this article, we will go over several reasons to read your car owner’s manual.

1 – Keep it maintained

Regular maintenance is one of the most important things that you can do to keep your car running properly. Since every car is different and has a different maintenance schedule, it is very important to consult your manual for guidance on what to replace and when.

If you fail to maintain your car then you will have some expensive repair bills further down the line. Even if you have the best Toyota extended warranty, it isn’t likely to cover repairs that were avoidable due to negligence when it comes to maintenance.

Take some time to create a spreadsheet that contains the items that need to be replaced or repaired and the timeframe in which it should be done. This way you can monitor them and do things on time.

For instance, the timing belt is something that has to be replaced but the mileage is different for every car. For some, it needs to be replaced within 80,000 miles while others are ok until you reach 100,000.

2 – For safe operation of the car

A big portion of the manual is dedicated to the safe operation of the car. If you think you already know enough, then this means you really need to brush up on the safety advice since it can be different for every car.

Since the safe operation of the car is one of the most important things that you can do, you will need to take a look at that section of the book and memorize it. This is especially true for the engine light symbols so you know what they mean if they appear on your dashboard.

3 – Personalize your car

Your car comes with the factory defaults for many of the settings. When you read the manual you can then change many of the settings to reflect your needs better. The position of things like the steering wheel and seats can be adjusted and in some cases remembered for each driver if your car has that option.

This will give you a more comfortable ride and driving experience when you change all the defaults to your preferences.
